Northumberland Under 15 Girls League Cup Final
Lowick 2 North Shields 1
Saturday 22nd May saw the Lowick United Under 15 girls team take on league champions North Shields in the cup final at Cramlington Sporting Club.
North Shield went into this match as favourites, having only been beaten once in the last 3 seasons.
The game was played in temperatures approaching 80 degrees Fahrenheit and it is testament to the fitness of both teams that they competed throughout,
Lowick started the game more brightly, with the pace of striker Becky Robinson troubling the North Shields defence and the first scoring opportunity of the game came after 5 minutes when Robinson beat the offside trap only to have her shot parried by the keeper. This set the trend for much of the game with Lowick absorbing pressure and counter-attacking through Carly Robertson, Libby Scott and Robinson.
The breakthrough came after 15 minutes when a Georgia Thompson through ball released Robinson on the left who cut the ball back for Sammy Grieve to score from 10 yards. Lowick now seemed to be in control with Thompson and Holly McKenely bossing the midfield. As the first half drew on the heat began to take its toll and rolling substitutions were made. Both teams were competing for every 50:50 ball and the Lowick defence of Kirsten Patterson, Oriana Frame, Mel Steven and Catherine Cass were put under severe pressure. The North Shields forwards began to pepper the Lowick goal with shots, but all were either off target or comfortably dealt with by Courtney Purvis in the Lowick goal.
However just before half time the equaliser came when Lowick were unable to clear, following a corner and the opposition captain hooked a looping shot over the outstretched Purvis.
Halftime came as a welcome chance to take on water and to re-organise with substitutes Georgia Sheriff and Leonie McLeod entering the fray.
The second half continued as the first had finished with North Shields exerting pressure and beginning to dominate in midfield. Although Lowick were at times pushed back to the edge of their penalty area they never panicked and the midfield and defence combined to prevent any clear-cut scoring opportunities. Thompson, Patterson, Frame and Steven, deserving special mention for their application and resolve.
Lowick always continued to look dangerous on the break and with their speedy forwards they were always able to find an outlet to relieve the pressure.
With 10 minutes to go and the game looking like it would go to extra time further substitutions were made with Hope Oliver and Ailsa Skelly bolstering the defence and allowing Lowick to get a grip on midfield, with Thompson, McKenely and Grieve finding more time on the ball. It was a McKenely pass which found Robinson on the left wing, she beat the full back and crossed for Robertson to score from close range. Pandemonium then ensued on the touchline with coaches, parents, substitutes and supporters celebrating.
To their credit North Shields had not wilted in the soaring temperatures and they were spurred on to a last effort, but their chance came and went when with 2 minutes to go their centre forward crashed a shot on the bar from the edge of the penalty area.
It was a superb all round team performance and all players contributed to a fantastic victory.
Lowick 4 - 1 Bedlington - 8th May 2010
This was a hard fought semi-final with both teams going for the win. Bedlington had the better of the opening 15 minutes with some good passing football. Lowick's defence stood up to the task with Kirsten Patterson in outstanding form. Bedlingtons pressure soon paid off when they scored direct from a corner. This seemed to wake the Lowck team up, with the midfield duo of Holly Mackenly and Georgia Thompson running and tackling well. Lowick's equaliser came when a long clearence from Lowick's keepe took a few lucky ricochet's and Becky Robinson cooly slotted home. Lowic then took the lead just before half time when a mistake from the Bedlington keeper resulted in a free kick just outside the box, a well taken free kick from Sammy Grieve found the top right hand corner of the net.
Saturday 6th March 2010 - Lowick 2- 1 Bedlington
Lowick settled the quicker of the two teams with Sammy Grieve, Becky Robinson and Libby Scott all testing an inform Bedlington keeper. Some good strong play by Carly Robertson on the wing resulted in a cross which Sammy Grieve met and shot narrowly wide.
Lowick had the better of the play in the first with Holly Mackenley playing well in midfield. They were unlucky to go into half time 1-0 down when some sloppy defending let Bedlington into score.
Lowick made changes for the second half and from kick off started putting the Bedlington defence under pressure, this payed off when a cross- cum- shot by Robertson found the back the back of the net to level the game. This was the luck Lowick needed and straight from kick off Lowick won the ball back and some good link play from Holly Mackenley and Georgia Thompson resulted in the latter score a brilliant indvidual goal where she took the ball flicked it over her head and volleyed into the net to make 2-1.
Bedlington pushed for an equaliser but player of the match Courtney Purvis in the Lowick goal thwarted Bedlington on numerous occassions with some excellent goal keeping. Lowick held on to maintain their unbeaten run.

Saturday 12th Dec 2009: Ashington 2- 5 Lowick United
The Lowick girls entered this fixture full of confidence, top of the league and on the back of a 6 game run of impressive victories. The team have been scoring goals for fun recently and have the best defence in the league.
The day was to be full of surprises however, the first one being that Leonie forgot her boots and was going to play in trainers! The second surprise was that the game was to be played on third generation astro-turf (perhaps Leonie had known something that we did`nt). Many of the girls were wary of the surface having never played on it before and this showed in the opening exchanges of the game.
Ashington started the game brightly having the best of the early exchanges and putting the Lowick defence of Catherine, Oriana and Ailsa under early pressure. Lowick always looked dangerous on the break and Becky had an early opportunity to score narrowly missing from 20 yards. The pitch was proving difficult to master and Lowick did not seem able to employ their passing game. Ashington were gaining a lot of possession in midfield and after 15 minutes they opened the scoring when there centre forward latched on to a through pass to score.
This spurred on Lowick and after 20 minutes Sammy released Becky who went on to slot the ball home. In previous games this would have been the impetus for Lowick to press on and score more goals but despite the tireless work of Mel and Georgia in midfield Ashington continued to have the better of the play and although Becky and Libby has further chances to score it was Courtney in goal who had to be alert making a great save just before half time.
The second half saw positional changes with Mel moving to sweeper and Oriana moving into midfield. This seemed to have the desired effect as although Ashington continued to pressurize the Lowick defence they began to create chances on the break and after the keeper parried a shot from Sammy, Becky was able to follow up and score from close range. Lowick took confidence from this and with Holly getting room on the right wing chances began to increase. Becky`s shooting radar finally began to work and Lowick increased their lead with only 20 minutes to go when a through ball from Georgia allowed Becky to get her hat-trick.
Due to injuries and tactical adjustments substitutions were made and Hope, Leonie and Kirsten slotted into the team. For the first time in the game Lowick began to dominate and it was against the run of play when a foul was committed on the edge of the 18 yard box allowing Ashington a scoring opportunity. The Ashington captain took the free kick and scored a goal David Beckham would have been proud of, it was now 2-3!
It seemed like it would be a nervous last 15 minutes for the coaches but we need not have feared. Catherine took a short corner to Sammy, received the ball back and curved the ball over the keeper, her first goal of the season. Nerves finally settled, Lowick were now in full swing with both Becky and Leonie having chances to score, before Sammy got her reward scoring Lowicks fifth goal minutes before the final whistle.
Although not Lowicks best performance of the season it as a good victory against strong opponents and bodes well for the final 4 league games, which are all home fixtures. Sammy Grieve was deservedly named as player of the match, whilst Courtney, Becky, Georgia and Catherine all had excellent games.
Sat 28th Nov 2009: North Shields 3 - 4 Lowick Utd
Lowick's winning run continued against a strong North Shields team. After the defeat Lowick Utd U15's suffered at home (a narrow 2-1 loss) the girls were determined to get something form this game and it was clear from kick off that it was going to be a close contest.
Lowick settled quicker than the home team and good work in midfield with Georgia T and Holly dominating. A fine pass from Sammy found Becky who ran on to score Lowick's 1st goal. It was end-to-end stuff and Lowick missed a chance to go 2-0 up when Libby narrowly put past the post. She made amends for this in the second half. Carly was making some good runs on the right wing and at times had the North Shields defence run ragged. Just before half time North Shields equalised making honours even at the interval.
Instead of Lowick's heads going down they came out in the second half with even more determination, but it was North Shields who went 2-1 up. Lowick pushed on and was quickly level when the ball fell to Libby and a bullet shot went in off the crossbar 2-2. Not settling for the draw Lowick battled well. Some good clearances from Katherine kept finding Sammy on the left who always delivers a good ball. Most play came on the right wing with Carly having her best game of the season so far and this resulted in a great individual goal, Carly got the ball near the half way line and beat three North Shields players and fired into the top right hand corner to make it 3-2.
Again Lowick pushed on and was quickly 4-2 up when good work in midfield by Georgia T found Becky and she slotted home for her second of the game. This seemed to spur North Shields on and they piled the pressure on, they hit the bar twice and some fine goal keeping from Courtney frustrated them. There was nothing either the defence or the goalkeeper could do for North Shields third goal, this made the game 4-3 and made it a nervous last 5 minutes. But Lowick shut up shop and came away with the three points they richly deserved.
Another brilliant display from the whole team. Well done Becky, oppositions player of the match. Managers player of the match went to Carly.
Sat 21st Nov 2009: Blyth Town 0 - 8 Lowick Utd
Lowick went into this game full of confidence and after an even start to the game Lowick settled down very quickly and started to dominate.
Libby, Becky and Carly all tested the Blyth keeper and she did well to keep a buoyant Lowick team at bay. Quick play from a throw-in from Carly resulted in Holly picking the ball up just outside the box and coolly slotted home the opening goal. Lowick was quickly on the score sheet again when some good play by Carly on the wing resulted in Georgia Thompson receiving the ball and a shot on goal resulted in the Blyth keeper spilling the ball only for G.T to follow the ball up and score.
Lowick was 4-0 up at half time with goals coming from Sammy and Becky after they swapped positions. It could have easily been more if it were not for the Blyth keeper making some outstanding saves. Blyth started brightly in the second half and the outstanding Mel at the back dealt with an early free kick effectively. Substitutions were made with Libby and Ailsa making way for Leonie and Oriana, and Georgia S and Hope coming on for Katherine and Carly. Lowick kept the pressure on and some good football by Kirsten and Leonie saw the ball fall to Sammy who made it 5-0. Quickly after this Lowick was 6-0 up with Sammy getting her hat-rick. Georgia T made it 7-0. Lowick took advantage of the rolling subs and Libby came on to make it 8-0.
Blyth did have some good shots but keeper Courtney was more than able to deal with them, she also made some good clearances. The score line could easily have been double figures if it hadn't been for an on-form Blyth keeper. All in all Lowick United's confidence is growing game by game, which will put them in good stance for next week's top of the table clash against North Shields. Well done Becky Player of the Match.
Word from Assissant Gaffer - Another solid performance by Lowick whose team spirit is second to none You all played well from the keeper to the defence through the midfield to the strikers; well done all of you. The efforts you have all put in this year and the hard works is starting to pay off. A hard game next week keep up the good work and be proud of yourselves for what you have achieved so far. - Dawn
Sat 14th Nov 2009: Ponteland 1 - 11 Lowick Utd
The Girls continued their recent good run with a third away win of the season at Ponteland. After good wins at Kingston Park and Bedlington in recent weeks the squad went into the match in high spirits but were soon put in their place when Ponteland started by far the stronger an took an early lead. Up till then Lowick had found it very hard to get their passing game going and were being closed down very quickly by the home side.
After a reshuffle in midfield things started to look a lot better and Carly and Sammy playing out wide started to get behind the home defence and looked dangerous. Sammy Becky and Libby all went close before Sammy got us back on level terms and then soon after she put Lowick 2-1 up. Once in front Lowick never looked like giving up their lead and a further 3 goals from Sammy as well as 2 each for Libby and Becky along with strikes from Georgia T, and captain Marvel Mel saw the match won.
The scoreline is not a true reflection on how well Ponteland played especially in the first 20 minutes and I am sure they will provide very difficult opposition when they travel to Berwick later in the season.
Another very good all round performance and well done to everyone but especially Sammy who was voted by Ponteland as our player of the match for her all round performance.
The team are again on their travels this weekend when they travel to Blyth Spartans
