A word from your gaffer

You are genuinely beginning to play a team game. Players are passing without being told and making some runs off the ball that is advanced for your age. You are starting to keep a shape in team without being forced into specific positions. Keep working on your individual skills and don't be afraid to test yourself in games.

12th December v Alnwick Terriers
The Hotspurs found themselves under pressure from a skilful Alnwick side in the first quarter of this match, Jack in goal conceding early on, and only some determined defending kept the Alnwick at bay. Lowick gradually got back into the game and Craig and Rhys ensured the first break was reached with the Hotspurs in control.

The second quarter saw Danny and Adam taking control in defence. Craig performed well in goal and Greig, in his first game, started to win the midfield battle along with Blayne and provide some good service to Rhys and Jack up front. Jack returned to goal for the third quarter and the Hotspurs kept the advantage even though Alnwick never gave up and remained determined opponents throughout the whole game.

The forth quarter saw Lowick finishing the stronger side and Craig scored a twice-taken penalty even though he was the goalkeeper in this period. This was a tough game for Lowick with two closely matched teams competing to the final whistle. Once again the whole team performed well.

Player of the week this week is Danny who turned in another fine defensive performance in a very difficult game for Lowick.

Finally with the first half of the season over, a big thank you to Bill and everyone at Lowick for helping Robert and myself settle in so quickly and thanks to all the parents for their support and the biggest thanks to the Hotspurs team who have done all that we have asked of them.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all of you. – Steve Keller

21st November v Longhorsely

Lowick welcomed back Danny and Adam this week to their normal defensive positions. Craig and Jack kept goal in the first two quarter's with Brian in midfield and Rhys up front. A closely fought first half against a determined Longhorsley side only a fine save from Jack keeping the sides level at half time.

Brian kept goal in the third quarter and with Adam in midfield and Craig up front (although he was meant to be in defence) Lowick began to gain the upper hand. Jack returned to goal for the final quarter and with Brian and Danny now in defence and Rhys Adam and Craig all making strong runs forward Lowick finished the game strongly.

Fine performances from the whole team again today.  Danny once again showed what an assured defender he is and Adam played well in defence and made some strong runs from midfield. Brian had a good quarter in goal and also played well in defence and midfield. Craig played in goal and gave his usual strong running performance up front, Rhys continues to do all that is asked of him in midfield and upfront and is and integral part of the team. This weeks player of the week is Jack who played well on his two quarters on pitch and kept a clean sheet in his time in goal, making an important save to keep the scores level just before half time.

21st November v Longhoughton Wolves

This match was the Hotspurs toughest test so far, with injury and illness ruling out both regular defenders, Danny and Adam, as well as Chris who was player of the week last time out.

It was difficult for the players to adapt to their new positions and during the first two periods, despite Jack and Brian making some important saves. Longhoughton dominated the early part of the game but we continued to make chances and by halftime we had started to get back in contention when Craig’s shooting boots  resumed normal service.

The third quarter saw Craig in goal and the team growing in confidence in their new positions. The goals continued to come and, in a highlight of the game, Rhys fired in an out-swinging corner right onto Brian's foot who finished like a pro. Jack returned to goal for the last period and again kept a clean sheet.

A great performance from everyone today to fight back in a game that started off looking like we were going to struggle against a strong Longhoughton  team who put in a good performance. Brian , Craig and Jack all performed well in goal and when playing outfield. Blayne gave his usual all-action performance in defence and midfield, winning plenty of tackles. Rhys never stopped running up front, and took a lot of pressure off of the defence at times in the game when we were struggling. This was the team’s most difficult game so far and will have been a great learning experience for them.

Player of the week, goes to Brian, he played in every position including in goal, gave his all and also managed to score a hat trick.

7th November v Alnwick All Stars

This was a brilliant performance for a young squad who are quickly turning into a team. Team shape, movement off the ball, passing combinations and communication are all starting to happen.

Jack K started off in goal and certainly has potential to be a useful keeper if that is what he chooses. Later he made a very strong contribution as an outfield player, using his strength go good effect and scoring the goal of the match from 20 yards (was it a cross, will we ever know?)

Danny is a natural defender, he concentrates and times his tackles to perfection. Adam showed great discipline in a defensive role and knew when to make his fast forward runs scoring a great individual goal. Chris got man of the match for his best performance since last season. He looked happy and confident and was once again showing off all the natural talent that he obviously has. The progress that Blayn has made is exceptional taking on opponents successfully in attack and defence.

Rhys and Craig are a real double-act, the way they combine to penetrate opponents defence, frequently supported by Brian's hard working efforts in midfield is a big strength of this squad. Combined with the Albion in 10 or 12 years time the future of Lowick Utd 1st team looks good.
